Join us for the Literature Seminar: The Practice of Uselessness

What: The Practice of Uselessness, a new short-story club
When: Tue Apr 11, 2017, 6 pm – 7:30 pm (MST)
Where: Engineering Research Center (ERC), first floor, Room: 189. Snacks will be provided.
Also available through Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/637238824

Come join this new, informal biweekly short-story reading club organized by a QESST Scholar. The goal is to get involved more in art and literature and all other practices that seem useless in the current days; those humble experiences may show us how to participate in shifting the center (of our lives) to the margin and the margin to the center; that is, how to be more creative! For each session, we will invite a faculty member—mostly from the Art, Literature and English departments—to talk about their favorite selected short story for the first half of the session. We’ll then have a discussion in the second half. Please read the story beforehand. We would be delighted if you would join. We will start by reading A Report to an Academy written by Franz Kafka and selected by Prof. Ronald Broglio, professor of literature in the English department at ASU. Prof. Broglio’s research focuses on how philosophy and aesthetics can help us rethink the relationship between humans and the environment. Please read the story beforehand and please pass this along to any friends that you think may be interested. Access will be available via Zoom for non-ASU students who are willing to participate.

We’ll start the session 40 min sooner (5:20 pm) to read the story text together. So, those who didn’t have a chance to read it by now may join.
Prof. Broglio will join us right at 6:00 pm.
Hope to see you!
